  • Grade Inflation: GPA rose notably from ~3.17 to ~3.36 (2010–2021), while test scores fell.
  • Learning Discrepancy: A's and B's have increased, but many students still fail to meet college-readiness.
  • Elite School GPAs: At elite colleges, a large share of applicants have near-perfect GPAs.
  • AP Score Inflation: On the nine most popular AP exams, the share of students passing (scoring 3 or higher) jumped from about 52 percent in 2021 to 71 percent in 2025. The jump followed a scoring change called "evidence-based standard setting," not a rise in actual student performance.
